Those who remain in Mariupol

Vоенкор Котенок Z, [3/29/2022 7:35 AM]

My latest report from Mariupol.

People from the liberated areas of the city are gradually getting out onto the streets. Seek help, including medical help. Many need evacuation to get out of the war zone.

All the details are in my article. You can also find more photos there. Suddenly someone recognizes their relatives, friends.

Those who remain in Mariupol

by Денис Григорюк

What residents in the war zone say

The stop at the exit from Mariupol was practically untouched. It’s like she’s not from this military reality, where the remains of trucks that once carried ammunition are rusting a few hundred meters away, but they were knocked out at the entrance to the city. We stopped at this point to put on our bulletproof vests and helmets, check the cameras, and prepare for the trip to the city. On the horizon, burnt houses, charred roofs sticking out and a stretching line could be seen.

There were no more people on the road of life. The warehouses must have been emptied by now, wasting energy walking here on foot was a pointless exercise. But on the road to Mariupol lined up a column of cars. It was the queue to enter the city. Cars with the inscriptions "People" and "Children" sought to get back to Mariupol. The only explanation that I found for myself was to take away those who still remained in the war zone.

But the main change was the silence. Relaxing, killing vigilance. At such moments, it is easy to believe that the fighting is localized in the Azovstal area. Alas, these were wrong thoughts. Street fighting continues throughout the city.

Mariupol residents were everywhere, tired, shabby, with indifference in their eyes. They crowded near the Metro building, where humanitarian aid is now being given out, generators are working to charge gadgets, and you can also buy groceries for hryvnia. At the sight of people in bulletproof vests and helmets, they came up to get at least some information. If cameras noticed, they asked to record an appeal to relatives so that they knew that their loved ones from Mariupol were alive. Tears were not held back.

Last time, it was not possible to get deep into the city. The shelling stopped a group of journalists, and they had to retreat from the courtyards, where the Nazis from the Azov regiment were still housed in hiding places. This time we intended to go much further. Many journalists had lists with addresses. Through war correspondents, people in Russia, Donetsk and other cities of Donbass are trying to find out information about their relatives with whom contact was lost due to hostilities.

The Ukrainian army fired on civilians

Metal clang. It was as if a broken string hit the slab. The sound is nasty, reminiscent of something, something dangerous. Gradually they got used to it while driving along the streets of Mariupol. At one of the surviving five-story buildings I saw a fresh mound with a wooden cross. There are a lot of them in Mariupol. Scattered in those parts of the city where the toughest fighting took place.
